Every day brings worry, concern, and wonder. There are no constants. There is no True North. Yet this was a year of heavy participation and much anticipation. We all needed this. Multiple months of home quarantine. Multiple weeks of solitude. All we wanted was a chance to feel that rolling river, rock our mood away. We all wanted that confirmation of a handshake, a hug, a high five. That connection of energy that allows you to have that synapse fire, that neuron spark, that endorphin explode. The boat trailer was long gone. Our shuttle was history. We are dependent upon the river van. You know that van down by the river! Where Horseshoe Flats goes from home to history. This year was different. It felt like a Boyle on the butt of humanity. Our solitude brought out the boats. Tanner again drove from Gainesville, FL and partnered with rookie Brian Larkin. Brian, I am impressed. Your first river trip sharing a boat with Tanner is like being assigned to run Charles Barkely’s twitter account. It’s a shit job, but lots of laughter. Here are the boats, as I remember. John Salvatore and I were slow to start. John Gonella and Chris Northcutt were up front and ready to paddle. Nick Salvatore and Marcus Clodfelter finally stopped arguing about how to take down the tent. Jason Hoke and Marcus Goswick knifed there way into the river. John Lane and Billy Kestler pushed off to thwart an adventure. Matt Cairns and Mickey walked into the rapids. Day one was a beach. River bar. Easy camp. Good dinner. Fine weather.We were somewhat distant. Not as conglomerate as normal. Separate but yet together. Large fire. Large day. Day two. Late start. Breakfast was off. Late and un-managed. Big fire was easily rekindled. Bacon sizzle slow to start. 3 pounds of bacon cooked on aluminum foil and a campfire grate. Extra bacon was never consumed. Alarming. The slow moving river and ease has us asking for more. We push the envelope and go left left left. Leaving very little space to navigate, but incredible river view. We stop at a beautiful rock outcropping and admire the river’s beauty. And its treachery. Our river bar is magnificent. Many have stopped to join us on this rock on the razors edge. All of us can see the challenge in store. The path is not easy. Mickey and Cairns wisely decide to walk the rapids John Salvatore and I decide to take on the river. Pushing the limits of our maneuverability and paddle dexterity. We are showing only Aces and getting more confident by the hairpin turn. We quickly lose our boat confidence as we slam into a large Volkswagen sized boulder. Upending us and all our contents into the rapids. By the time we regain our control, find a shoreline, and dismiss the river from our canoe, we are reclaiming our gear from a john-boat, of kind fisherman, who has salvaged our coolers, our dry bags, but not our dignity. As we make our way down river holding the only two possessions worth holding (paddles) we notice a very odd site. All of our friends are standing right river bank side. Out of the boats. Staring into the center of the river. John and I see the ass end of a canoe bouncing in the current upside down. We recognize this boat as the “two in the pink, one in the stink” canoe of Jason Hoke and Marcus Goswick. Neither of whom are anywhere near this boat. There is a problem. A large problem. A river anchor has found a way out of the boat, into the deep water and lodged itself very securely in between two river bottom rocks. Holding the canoe hostage in the fast water rapids. The only thing more alarming than the anchor line, is the river bag attached to the driver seat, that possesses the keys to the ride home. So no salvage, no keys, no canoe, no home. There are a few of us who are attempting to upend the pinned canoe. We manage to flip it over to expose the dry bag with the keys and the anchor line, but the minute one side is touched, the canoe dives underwater again. Its like every touch we make to the area of concern is a sink hole of despair. After 2.5 hours of effort. We are concerned. We are distraught. We come up with a plan. Two of us will upend the boat, exposing the topside to above water exposure. Mickey will scramble upstream, drop into the red bag zone, and release the dry bag holding the 4 runner keys for exit.
